Hollywood Insider Interview with Actress Natalia Kostrzewa

Hollywood World: First of all, congratulations to the “Calling Home” team for receiving the IFFNY Grand Jury Prize “Best Actress” Nomination in New York. How did you feel at the time when you found out?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I was absolutely delighted. Megan K. Fox (the director) had written such a beautiful character for me. I was lucky to be part of the film. Everybody who was involved in making it contributed to my nomination.

Hollywood World: How did you come into acting career?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I started acting when I was very young back in my hometown in Poland. And once I started acting, I never stopped. It truly is a lifelong affair.

Hollywood World: Which film, was the turning point in your life and career?

Natalia Kostrzewa: There have been many turning points. However, I think getting the lead part opposite Richard Brake in a psychological thriller Perfect Skin, that is doing its festival run at the moment, was a real highlight. I can’t wait for the film to be released, for people to see it.

Hollywood World: Who has supported you to come into this field?

Natalia Kostrzewa: My wonderful mother. She always keeps the perfect balance of encouragement and support without being pushy and letting me make my own decisions.

Hollywood World: What is “Calling Home” film about?

Natalia Kostrzewa: For me ‘Calling Home’ is about highlighting the harsh reality of how easy it is to actually become homeless. We all are so easy at judging a homeless person assuming it is due to addiction or crime. In fact homelessness could happen to anybody.

Hollywood World: Who else is involved in this production?

Natalia Kostrzewa: ‘Calling Home’ was a real collaboration of many talented people. We had a wonderful DOP Ben Calloway who beautifully captured the mood of the film, Composer Bankey Ojo and costume design by Filipa Fabrica. Everybody involved put their heart and soul into this gem.

Hollywood World: What makes a good scene partner? With which actor did you like working with?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I have worked with many great actors over the years. I have been lucky to collaborate and learn from many talented people. But most recently I was impressed by the generosity and willingness to play of Tom Riley. We worked together on a new drama ‘Dark Heart’ for ITV that will be showing in Autumn in UK.

Hollywood World: What are your favorite projects you have been part of?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I have been part of many fun projects but the one that sounds out is feature film ‘Perfect Skin’ where I had to shave my head and stay in the make-up hair for long hours. The film takes place in the work of body modification and tattooing.

Hollywood World: Can you please tell us about your upcoming film/festivals/projects?

Natalia Kostrzewa: Kew Media Group has acquired world sales rights to Kevin Chicken’s dark thriller Perfect Skin. There will be a lot of exciting festivals this film will be going too but I am not yet allowed to speak about them.

Hollywood World: What have you learned from the directors that you have worked with throughout your career?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I was very impressed by Colin Teague on the set of ‘Dark Heart’ and how he gave equal attention to his lead actors and supporting cast. Working with Kevin Chicken on ‘Perfect Skin’ was a great experience. He always had time to listen to any suggestions and he is a true collaborator. I’m very happy I got to work with Megan K. Fox on three different projects over the years and I got to see the incredible progress she made. I really can’t wait to see her debut feature. It’ll be really something. She is one to watch.

Hollywood World: What has been your biggest achievement in the field of acting?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I think my biggest achievement is the fact that I’m still doing it. I have never given up and I’ve been through quiet times where there was no work and I still have a lot of love and joy for it. Acting can be a love – hate relationship. But I have learned how to just have love for it and I never been busier.

Hollywood World: What do you think is most important in the field?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I think mental health is a very important thing for an actor. And not many people talk about it. Actors are delicate and sensitive individuals. A lot of actors get depressed when they don’t work. I have learned that my happiness can’t be based solely on acting. So, I seek happiness from every aspect of my life. That puts less pressure on my career.

Hollywood World: Any tips about how to be a successful actor?

Natalia Kostrzewa: To be a successful actor you really have to work hard and take pleasure in the journey. Never focus too much on the outcome solely. I do hope that every film I make, people will see and like it. But I don’t have control over that. So I try to live more in the moment and take satisfaction and happiness from being on the set, researching the character, working with other actors and directors. And if the project will be successful that’s great. My goal is to always have a great time on set. I think being happy and content as an actor is a real success. Not red carpets.

Hollywood World: What do you want to be remembered for in life? What valuable lessons have you learned that helped you become the person you are today?

Natalia Kostrzewa: I want to be remembered as somebody who brought a little light into your life. That would be good enough for me.
